Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!

Coincidentally, it is also the Chap Goh Meh, (literally translated to 15th Night, or Night of the 15th), which is the Chinese version of Valentine's.

It is called the 15th Night because it is the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, marking the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations. It is a time when families get together for a meal and festivities. Traditionally, it is the night when singletons are allowed to go and mingle with other singletons (chaperoned), and matchmakers would be busy matching couples. I remember my Mum telling me of young men and women throwing mandarin oranges into the river. I always thought that it worked like throwing a coin into a wishing well, but apparently singletons would write their names and contact details on the oranges, and they would then get in touch after fishing them out of the river.

Anyway, the two Valentine's apparently only coincide every 19 years or so, so Happy Double Valentine's everyone!
